About this Tool

Determine how easy your text is to read with the Readability Score Calculator. This tool analyzes your content and calculates its score based on the Flesch Reading Ease and Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level formulas, helping you write more accessible content.

Readability formulas are used to measure the accessibility of a text. They work by analyzing sentence length and word complexity (often measured by syllables). The Flesch-Kincaid formulas are among the most common, providing a score that correlates to a U.S. school grade level, making it easy to understand if your text is suitable for your target audience.

  1. Paste your text into the input field.
  2. The tool instantly analyzes the text.
  3. The results panel will display key metrics like word count, sentence count, and average syllables per word.
  4. The Flesch Reading Ease score and the corresponding U.S. school grade level will be shown.

The tool implements two main formulas. The Flesch Reading Ease formula is: 206.835 - 1.015 * (Total Words / Total Sentences) - 84.6 * (Total Syllables / Total Words). The Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level formula is: 0.39 * (Total Words / Total Sentences) + 11.8 * (Total Syllables / Total Words) - 15.59. The tool counts words, sentences, and syllables to plug into these equations.

What is a good Flesch Reading Ease score?

A score of 60-70 is considered easily understandable by 13-15-year-old students. For a general audience, aiming for a score above 60 is a good goal.

Does a higher grade level mean the writing is better?

Not necessarily. It just means the writing is more complex. The "best" grade level depends entirely on your target audience. For a broad audience, a lower grade level (around 8th grade) is often recommended.
